National Trusts Comments about Hereford Relief Road

The National Trust’s concern relates to the proposed Hereford Relief Road in policy H2.  The Trust’s charitable purpose is to protect places of historic interest and natural beauty for the benefit of the nation.  Our property ownership nearest to Hereford comprises land within the Wye Valley to the west of the city, including Breinton, Perry Hill Farm and The Weir Estate.  Although the proposed inner western route would not directly impact on these properties, we need to consider them within their setting and wider context.  As reported in the Sustainability Appraisal, the proposed relief road would have significant adverse effects on the landscape and could have significant adverse effects on biodiversity.  We also consider that the relief road would have an adverse effect on the tranquillity and peaceful enjoyment of the area, including the Wye Valley Walk which links to our property at Breinton.  The significance of the Wye Valley and the Wye Valley Walk as green infrastructure is recognised in the council’s recent Green Infrastructure Strategy.  We remain to be convinced that the benefits of the road would outweigh the harm that it would cause.
